Catch a glimpse of sea life when onboard a cruise ship
A great thing about cruising is that you get to see some marine life and other wildlife that you would not normally see in your day to day travels, this solely depending on where in the world you live of course!
Over recent years I have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of many things including Dolphins, Whales, Turtles, Dragon-Fly’s and one interesting little creature on board Oriana 3 years ago. What it was I have no idea but it looked less than inviting. It almost resembled something out of a horror movie but we shall not go any further with that one.
Dolphins are a common site on cruises, I especially watch out for them when cruising the waters just off the coast of southern Spain, they seem to enjoy this area. It is common for them to play in the trail left by the ship, they weave in and out, jump out of the water almost begging you to go and play with them. One thing I have noticed which seems to be a common occurrence is that if you are sailing in one direction and the dolphins are swimming in the other then it’s fair to say that some less than perfect weather is on its way.
I first noticed this again on Oriana and that same evening the swell was quite intense. Last year after this same thing happened I awoke the following day not knowing where on earth I was, the fog was extremely dense and from the ships top deck I could not even see the ocean! The fog horn was sounding repeatedly. Amazingly though within hours this dull atmosphere broke and we were once again greeted with the blistering summer sun.
A man once said to me “back in the day if you returned to your cabin to find your TV had been placed on the floor you knew you were in for a rough night” saying as the TV’s are now nailed down I would recommend using the dolphins as your weather guide, they have never misguided me yet.
