Choppy Seas when on a cruise
Since I started cruising I have been quite fortunate to have not encountered oceans that have decided to play with the ship as though it were in a washing machine but I have encountered a night or two here and there I would have quite happily avoided.
I remember one particular night where the journey back to my cabin felt like some kind of outdoor mountainous walk. I was trying to balance myself whilst avoiding multiple obstacles, the first one being the walls. It was a virtual impossibility to not simultaneously bounce off them. The ship was going side to side and up and down so you can imagine my dilemma. It was almost like you had to take your chances every time the ship went down on a wave, as soon as you felt that motion you had to run as quick as possible in order to cover as much ground as you could as once the ship started to go up over the next wave it became like an uphill trek. I know the cruisers amongst you will fully understand what I am talking about. Another extremely annoying thing though was that during all of this I could not stop laughing and constantly felt like I was getting no closer to my cabin. A journey that would normally take 2 or 3 minutes I think in the end took me 10 or 15. It was brilliant but at the same time it was exhausting!
On my most recent cruise the problem was similar but not as bad. Although I personally couldn’t feel too much in the way of movement the ships pools were clearly not happy as the water refused to stay in them. The noise of the sloshing back and forth and then the water crashing against the sides and leaping what must have been at least 20 foot into the air was immense. I sat and watched it for a good length of time, eagerly waiting for some poor un expecting soul to come through the glass doors behind and be soaked before they even got a chance to react.
If only all our sailings could be calm and tranquil, but then where’s the fun in that?!
