Leaving your pets behind on a cruise
Holidays are exciting and there is so much to remember and pack for that matter but if you are an animal lover like myself and have a pet or two to also take into consideration it can be quite a sad time too.
Your pet senses something is not right, it’s great for you but a different story for the sad eyed dog or cat watching you as you ransack your wardrobe and put the entire contents of your life into the world’s largest suitcase. I have a Cat, her name is Cleo and she is coming up to ten years old now. Previously I would book her into a local cattery for the time I was away on my cruise and I always hated having to do this. I felt utterly guilty knowing she would be thoroughly miserable not being in her own home. Luckily my mum now takes care of her whilst I am off sailing the world’s oceans so it is not quite as traumatic for either of us.
I sometimes feel she is trying her hardest to stop me from going anywhere, as soon as I open my case she dives straight into it and proceeds to settle herself down as if she had just been presented with the Cat bed of her dreams. When I do finally manage to pack my case I then face the task of actually closing it as yet again sitting on top of my clothes like she was King Tut is Cleo looking at me with such attitude and disgust as to say “and where exactly do you think you are going”.
If you have pets and will need to book them into a boarding kennel or cattery then be sure to do your research and don’t necessarily go for the most expensive option. I have found a family run cattery for example is a much nicer place than a larger chain and it is cheaper but you get more for your money. Always try and book your pet into the place for a day longer than you will be out of the country for. Yes you may arrive back in the UK early but take into account travelling time home and you may find it is easier to be reunited with your fluffy friend the following day. Doing it this way also allows an extra day in case mother nature was less than friendly and your ship was slightly delayed. This is rare but it is always best to be prepared.
