The Ships Whistle

As we all know ships have a remarkably loud “horn” and it is almost disappointing if the Captain does not sound it when leaving the port.

It’s exciting when a horn battle ensues between ships, last year whilst on board Ventura we were docked side by side with the Celebrity Eclipse, on the leaving the port both ships exchanged horn gestures both long and short with each giving a small burst on a more comical note at the end.

I do think that sometimes there should be some kind of warning, especially if you are unlucky enough to be standing directly under the funnel holding a rather tasty cocktail when the horn sounds. On many occasion I have had my head firmly blown off from this happening and if it were possible I am convinced my body would detach from my skin and run.

One whistle that I find interesting is that of the Disney ships. Steering far from the normal alert sound Disney adopts a more playful noise of “when you wish upon a star”. Hearing this for the first time I was rather taken a back, thinking to myself what on earth was that!? I still now cannot decide if I actually like this unusual whistle or if i find it rather cringe worthy. I am sure it is great for the kids.

All I will say is when leaving the port if you find yourself directly under the funnel I suggest you brace yourself, you know it’s going to sound but you will still find yourself jumping firmly out of your skin when it finally does.

i think the "Disney" tuneful horn is amazing

The most "dramatic" sounding of the horns I have ever experienced was in October, 2008. I was on the final transatlantic crossing of the Queen Elizabeth 2. This was a tandem crossing with the Queen Mary 2. On the final day of sailing, the QM@ pulled very close side by side with us. We were so close, people on both ships were able to converse with each other. Before the QM2 pulled forward, the two ships saluted each other repeatedly. The QM2 then pulled ahead as to be berthed in Southampton before the arrival of the QE2. It was a bittersweet memory that will stay with me for a very long time.

I have been on many Disney Cruises, i think 19 now, and i will let you know that on a Disney Cruise they do a quiet alert on the PA system to let everyone know that they will be sounding the ships whistle from the forward funnel. They then proceed to say "If you are on the open decks, you may want to cover your ears" So i think thats a nice touch rather than as you said, lose your pineapple rum.
