Unpredictable cruise Weather

Monday morning and back in the office. It’s dark and miserable outside but luckily I can talk about Cruising and Cruise Ships yet again all day and imagine I am a million miles away from this dreary damp British weather.

I think the weather is a key factor in Cruising, well it is for me anyway. I have only ever taken a Cruise during the warmer months or in months I know will be warmer than the UK. I find if I take a Cruise and the weather is less than perfect it really does put a cloud over the holiday (no pun intended) especially when you are anticipating baking heat day in day out. Although this can’t be helped it really is amazing how the weather can affect your enjoyment, or maybe that’s just because I love the summer months around a billion times more than the winter ones.

I remember being on Oriana in 2008, the weather was glorious but lurking in the distance the dark grey clouds were thundering towards us and I knew we were all in for a brief soaking. However to my sheer amazement as the storm grew closer it became clear it was no normal cloudy sky, it was in fact a rather impressive water spout. For those of you who are not sure what this is a water spout is similar to a Tornado. It is a Columnar Vortex that appears over a body of water. They are quite rare but certainly not unheard of in European waters. I had never seen one before nor have I seen one since but on this particular day I didn’t mind those clouds at all. It really was stunning to watch. I don’t recall it lasting long and it didn’t materialise too close to the ship but for the time it was in full bodied life I could not take my eyes from it.

There are so many interesting things to catch a glimpse of whilst at sea, so no matter what the weather just relax, lie back and enjoy every second of it because truth be known you will soon be back in the office wishing you hadn’t complained so much about those few grey clouds.
