One great feature of the Jewel is that families can choose from around 300 interconnecting cabins in a range of categories from standard insides to suites and all adjacent grades of cabins can be linked to create two- to five-bedroom areas. The Internet café open 24 hours a day, and room service runs 24 hours a day too. For kiddies there’s a full programme of activities, children as young as two can be left with the staff but you have to carry a beeper to go back and do your own nappy changes! There’s a child only paddling pool and a popular feature is the pair of life-sized "Alice & Wonderland" chess sets.

  • Dining: Two main dining rooms and half a dozen alternative eateries, three of which have a cover charge and three of which don’t
  • Family amenities: The Splashdown Kids Club is wonderful but note that you have to pay per hour for it on port days, so on a port heavy cruise this can be an expensive option
  • Top accommodation: The Garden Villa suites are huge, sleep ten in three bedrooms and, with the other suites, share a private courtyard which contains a smallish pool, a hot tub and a sort of mini-gym as well as butler service and internet connectivity
  • Entertainment and facilities: Cirque Bijou is a circus themed show, obviously, which is seriously spectacular, but there are great smaller shows in lounges and good themed events
  • Tipping: here the service charge that’s added automatically can be revoked by filling in a form at reception, which allows you to state how much of a tip you want to give. There’s a 15% surcharge on all bar bills and fitness classes.
