Starting next year cruise ships docking in Brooklyn, New York, will be supplied with electric shore power
The move is intended to reduce air pollution caused by cruise ships idling at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. NYC follows suit as other docks already can provide this “shore power” service
Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the announcement Wednesday. Brooklyn will be the first on the East Coast to adopt the cleaner technology
The New York Times reports that under the 5-year agreement, Carnival Corporation will pay 12 cents per kilowatt hour for the land-based electric power. The city will divide the remaining 16 cents. Carnival also will have to pay about $4 million to retrofit its ships that use the port, the Queen Mary 2 and the Caribbean Princess.
Shore Power is becoming more and more popular for ships whilst in port. It is more beneficial for the environment and for the overall fuel consumption of ships. A cost effective and cleaner energy source
