The cruise ship, Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the coast of the Tuscan island of Giglio has turned into a day trip tourist attraction.
The 116,000 ton cruise ship, which still sits partially submerged since she ran aground in January, seems to be the latest Italian excursion as people snap up tickets for ferry trips at up to 10 euro per person. It is even said that touts advertise the trip as a chance to see the stricken vessel. It is said that most of the ferry trips leave from Santo Stefano which is about 15km east and a part of the Italian mainland.
Sergio Ortelli, the island’s mayor, said: “There has been a rise in the number of tourists coming for the day, with curious people taking photos of the giant ship sprawled on the rocks.”
Giglio’s environment councilor, Alessandro Centurioni, said, ‘The Concordia has become part of our landscape, but it has also spoiled it. Every time I see it, I feel the pain and sadness once more.’
Plans are currently underway to remove the ship however it is said that she will not be righted until Spring 2013 as work has been delayed.
