Cruise Ship Volendam Rescues Sightseeing Passengers

Holland America Line, Volendam, was the hero yesterday when she raced to save the lives of over 70 people.

The small sightseeing vessel, Baranof Wind, ran aground in Alaska’s Glacier Bay and starter taking on water at 11am yesterday morning.

Coast Guard, David Mosley, said that the majority of passengers and crew aboard the 79ft vessel were transferred to the Holland America Line, Volendam, which was the closest vessel to the scene.

It is reported than thankfully no one aboard was seriously hurt, there were some minor injuries reported.

A few crew members from the Baranof Wind remained with the small vessel and worked with the Coast Guard to pump water out of the vessel in a desperate bid to keep her afloat. The boat has now been stabilized and there are no reports of any spillage or pollution from the vessel.

The Baranof Wind will now be towed to port where investigations will begin on how this accident happened.

The passengers onboard the Baranof Wind are believed to have been on an eight-hour sightseeing cruise on board the high-speed catamaran which can actually accommodate up to 149 people.
