Yesterday began the construction of Princess Cruises newest vessel with the official keel laying ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.
As well as it being a remarkable day with the start of construction it was also announced at the ceremony that the new ship will be named Regal Princess.
She is due to debut in spring 2014 and will be sister ship to Royal Princess which is due for delivery in June 2013.
Alan Buckelew, President and CEO, Princess Cruises said “Just as Royal Princess was named after one of our iconic early vessels, Regal Princess also takes a name from our past that we think is well suited for this spectacular ship. Today’s keel laying is an exciting event as it marks a key milestone in our new building program.”
After a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship’s keel was moved into position onto the keel blocks.
Regal Princess will offer space for 3,600 passengers once complete and will tip the scales at an impressive 141,000 tonnes.
She will offer many of the special and signature features we have come to know and love about Princess Cruises including the expanded atrium, SeaWalk, private poolside cabanas, pastry shop and more.
