Carnival Destiny Passenger is Rescued

A woman who jumped overboard from the Carnival Destiny was rescued on Sunday; officials have confirmed.

NBC News reported that the 29-year old female passenger was aboard Carnival Destiny, which left the port of Miami, Florida on Saturday, when she was seen jumping overboard at around 12:10am, a Carnival statement read.

Search and rescue operations were immediately put into effect and the woman was located.

She was brought back onboard the 2,642 passenger vessel and treated at the ship’s medical centre.

Medical staff onboard agreed she needed further treatment ashore and the Carnival Destiny was diverted to Key West in Florida. The ship had been due to call at Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

It is not clear why the woman jumped overboard and she has remained anonymous up to now.

The Carnival Destiny is currently on a 5 day cruise and is scheduled to return to Miami on Thursday.

The Carnival Destiny is due to undergo a massive refurbishment in 2013 and will emerge from it as the newly named Carnival Sunshine.

The 49 day dry-dock visit will see the ship transformed with the addition of the Fun Ship 2.0 amenities along with Guys Burger Joint and an EA Sports Bar.

Carnival started upgrading several ships within the fleet with the Fun Ship 2.0 amenities last year. The project is due to continue until 2015 at a cost of more than $500 million.
