Normally, most people going on winter fly cruises have been drawn to the Caribbean. With it's endless sun, flawless beaches and frenetic, fun in the sun vibe, it has proved an irresistible draw for decades now.
But I'd argue that the Far East now makes for at least a plausible winter alternative to the often overcrowded Caribbean. Why? Well, since Brexit became a fact, the pound has nosedived against the US dollar, and flight prices have soared to many US destinations, but in particular to popular cruise ports such as Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
By contrast, air fares to major Far East embarkation ports such as Bangkok and Singapore have remained relatively cheap, often more so than their American counterparts. And, with quality airlines such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines providing a large part of the airlift, the actual journey to and from the Far East- and transit through the airports- is a more pleasant, less stressful experience.
That's a vital prerequisite for many people who are tired of the hassle of transting US airports, but there is so much more worth considering. While increasingly busy, the 'Greatest Hits' ports of the Far East such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur and even Yangon, can offer a rich, cultural smorgasbord of sights, sounds and touring options that few other parts of the world can even come near.
Consider that even a short cruise could potentially showcase the amazing Temple of the Golden Buddah in Bangkok, the Vietnam war era tunnels of Cu-Chi just outside of Saigon, and the stunning Buddhist temple cpmplex of Shweddagon, in Burma. You could relive the days of Empire with a Singapore Sling at the legendary Raffles Hotel, and take an overland tour to the evocative Bridge on the River Kwai.
You could indulge your inner sun worshipper, and just relax on the gorgeous beaches of Phuket and elegant, laid back Langkawi, or shop till you drop in the myriad malls of Singapore. Take in the view from the top of Kuala Lumpur's stunning Petronas Towers, or enjoy the magnificent rock formations of Vietnam's Halong Bay. The choice is almost limitless.
And, of course, you get to do it all from the comfort and safety of your own floating hotel, where you pack and unpack only once. There are no worries about the quality and consistency of the food and service. Did I mention the good weather, and the all but guaranteed suntan?
