Crime on cruise ships

The legislation also would require cruise ships to have security latches and peepholes on the doors of passenger rooms. The cruise industry says Americans are safer on cruise ships than on land and that no regulatory changes are needed. The proposal follows the rape of a woman in 2006 by a cruise ship janitor. The woman says that she was given no help by Royal Caribbean cruise line in identifying the attacker or in properly securing evidence after the rape and that she was told she had drunk too much. The cruise line also gave her a bin liner to collect her own evidence of the rape, she claims. As part of the Congressional investigation it was discovered that there have been no convictions in rape cases on cruise lines in 40 years.
