South African government has refused to allow berthing permits for two ships that were due to travel to, and stay for, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The two ships: Westerdam and Noordam, were supposed to sail to the region and they berth up at Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth providing 4600 beds for football fans. But the South African Tourism Ministry which agreed provisionally to the deal, has said that the agreement was based on the ships bringing tourists to South Africa and that using the ships as hotels would be competition for the hotels that already exist locally and wouldn’t therefore add to the income generation or infrastructure development planned as a result of the World Cup tourism strategy.
The QEII was said to be travelling to Cape Town from Dubai for the same reason, but presumably that plan is also now on hold.
