Cruise passengers arrested in Antigua

Six American cruise passengers, travelling on Carnival Victory around the Caribbean, have been involved in a brawl that has led to their being arrested. A dozen cruise traveller got into an argument with a taxi driver in Antigua on Friday, after he charged them a fare they felt was extortionate. They argument turned into a fight when plain-clothes officers turned up and – according to the cruise passengers – initiated the fight without stating that they were police.

The six were arrested and bailed, during Carnival Victory’s stopover in Antigua, and according to six other tourists who were travelling with them and who were not arrested, they were detained only because they fought back against the police. They also stated that the group hadn’t been drinking alcohol. The arrested cruise passengers have been staying with Antiguan families who offered them rooms after they were told not to rejoin the ship until their case had been heard.
