As winter approaches the Caribbean becomes more and more attractive to British travellers and Antigua is one of the most popular destinations on any Caribbean cruise. It became a British travel destination as early as 1784 when Admiral Nelson sailed there to re-provision his ship and as a result ‘discovered’ the island that was to become Britain's most important Caribbean base. Cruise lines that sail to Antigua include Costa, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and P&O.
One of the greatest claims of the island is that it has a beach for every day of the year, as well as some easy to snorkel coral reefs which offer a fantastic opportunity to observe the world below your cruise ship which you would otherwise never see!
Nearby Barbuda, a more secluded island, has a fantastic Frigate Bird Colony and a more quiet and wild ambience than its laid-back but tourist focused neighbour of Antigua. And one thing that Antigua doesn’t lack is sporting opportunity: golf and cricket, sailing, swimming and diving are all eminently catered for. As it is an English speaking island, travellers find that there are no communication difficulties and because it’s only 14 miles by 11, getting around in a day trip is really simple.
