Oasis of the Seas has been at the forefront of innovation since her inception, when she was simply named ‘project Genesis. First a competition was held to choose the name of the new ship and in May 2008 it was decided she would become Oasis of the Seas. When she sets sail, at the end of this year, she’ll offer Caribbean cruises out of Port Everglades.
She’s going to have a WowPhone system – which is a handheld WiFi which lets people talk to each other via the onboard ship telephone system, and send texts, as well as acting as a locator to track down other people travelling together. But it’s not just a glorified intercom, travellers on Oasis of the Seas will be able to see their weekly calendar and the Why Not Today system which is a daily programme of events offered by the ship. There will be a charge for the WowPhone.
Staff on board will also have access to the hand-held technology, so if a customer orders a drink at the pool, the order can be transferred electronically to the bar so that when the server gets there, the drink is ready-made to be carried back to the poolside drinker. In the same way, if there is a maintenance issue, such as a spilled meal or a failed light, the system will alert the closest crew member to deal with it, rather than going through a central communications system.
