Cruise passengers dislike single surcharge

Regular single cruisers who took part in surveys conducted by the London-based agency, Mundy, felt that cruise lines treated them like second-class citizens when it came to accommodation and pricing.

They also said they disliked the stigma of being called single, preferring the term solo. Some even admitted that they did not live alone, but liked to cruise solo because they could be selfish and enjoy the flexibility to do what they wanted. Another concern was that single cabins are likely to be invisible and well out of the way.

At the end of last year, Carnival UK was forecasting an end to single supplements by 2020 and from 2009 Cunard will be slicing the single supplement on Queen Mary 2 from 100 per cent to 75%, and even as low as 50% on some April and May departures. P&O Cruises says that it adjusts the single supplements according to each cruise with a range between 20% - 60%.
