The Fiji Ministry of Tourism has sat down with tourist businesses and cruise ship companies to create a policy that aims to increase the number of cruise ships calling at the country and to maximise the involvement of stakeholders in the industry – in other words, to help local people benefit from the arrival of large numbers of affluent tourists.
The cruise element of Fiji’s tourism industry is one of the fastest growing sectors, increasingly annually between eight and ten per cent. The Ministry hopes that specific outcomes will include the strengthening of a network between local operators and overseas cruise ship owners and a better understanding of the cruise business environment. The launch of the new policy was seen at the first ever Cruises of Fiji Conference which began on 21st January at the Raffles Tradewinds Convention Centre in Lami, Fiji.
