Is the Cruise industry heading for a recession?

One industry that seems to be buoyant in the stormy waters of the current financial crises is the cruise industry.

Despite lowering house prices, bad employment predictions and a stock market downturn, it’s notable that cruise holidays performed well during the last two periods of recession in 1990 and 2001.

This could be because most people realise that when booking an annual holiday during a recession, value for money is vital, and the cruise industry offers many experiences in one package price, unlike static holidays which make the guest pay for every new experience. In addition, people can know in advance what they are paying for and choose the level of comfort or luxury that fits their pocket, whilst knowing that the experience – a new port, a dip in the pool or a sunset, would be equally enjoyable whether they were in a penthouse suite or a simple stateroom.
