Four big American cruise lines compared

Royal Caribbean has 19 liners and is best know for sailing to the Caribbean, although it has an increasing presence in the Mediterranean and Alaska. Known for its vast array of onboard activities and the way it offers headline entertainment.

Carnival Cruise Line has 22 cruise ships and sails to more than 60 destinations including the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska. Known as Fun Ships, this is the ideal line for taking your first cruise as its relatively cheap and has some shorter itineraries, that are ideal for first experiences.

Princess Cruise Lines has 15 ships and tends to focus on more exotic destinations worldwide. It’s a premium cruise line which offers a more upmarket experience.

Celebrity has just 9 ships and sails to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska, and northern Europe. The ships are noted for their unique art and fine cuisine.
