New York is called the Big Apple – a term pretty well invented by sports writer John J Fitzgerald in the 1920s to describe his luscious, bright city.
If you’re planning a transatlantic cruise, make sure you’re going to get enough shore time to enjoy the city because it has a lot to offer, from the lights of Broadway and Times Square to the beauty of the Statue of Liberty or the natural beauty of Central Park. Then there’s shopping of course, or if you’re not a keen shopper, how about visits to Brooklyn Bridge, the Bronx Zoo or The Museum of Modern Art. Autumn is a wonderful time to visit the region, remembering of course that Americans call it ‘fall’ because the leaf colour is superb and simply travelling around looking at the houses and parks is a visual feast.
And if none of that appeals to you, there are walking tours covering everything from Chinatown to Gourmet guzzling, which allow you to experience the best of the city on foot. And if you have time, there are even day trips to Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington DC organised by cruise lines. Virtually every cruise line sails to New York – perhaps the most famous transatlantic crossing is that offered by Cunard, but P&O, Princess, Holland America and Regent all offer cruises to the Big Apple, and Fred Olsen, Royal Caribbean and other lines have occasional cruises to the region.
