The company that owns Saga Rose, which is being sold off by the Saga cruise company, has poured cold water on the suggestion that the liner might become a floating hotel in Southampton. However, the reports that Saga Rose is being sold to an African cruise company are apparently also untrue.
In the summer it was suggested that Saga Rose, now on her final cruise, might be refitted to be permanently based on Southampton waterfront as a luxury floating hotel like the QEII. However, a spokesman for the vessel’s owners, sasy ‘The suggestion the ship would be berthed in Southampton was highly speculative. We are studying all our options for Saga Rose.’ The cruise company had thought about berthing her permanently on Town Quay to provide accommodation for around 460 people but it seems that the £15 million require to ensure the quay was suitable for this purpose was too expensive.
Saga Rose will be visiting the city for the last time on 6th December, after which she will be taken out of service.
