A typical cruise ship generates 30,000 gallons of human waste and 255,000 gallons of non-sewage gray water every day. So if you want an environmentally friendly cruise, who do you choose from?
Celebrity Equinox, the most recent Celebrity launched ship, boasts a plethora of systems to reduce her environmental impact, such as the 200 solar panels onboard, that provide power, the special silicon coating on the hull that reduces resistance as the ship moves through the water, so reducing fuel consumption. The window and porthole glass is designed to reduce heat transfer from outside into cabins and public rooms, cutting down the need for air conditioning.
As a comparison, Holland America Line won the 2008 Porthole magazine ‘Best Eco-Friendly Cruise Line’ award. It won this customer voted award because it has a comprehensive, fleet-wide programme of waste reduction and recycling, it complies with all international environmental guidelines and uses of cleaner-burning propulsion technology in all its new liners. In addition, HAL cruise liners either meet or exceed all international regulations governing the environmental management of marine operations.
