How about a voyage to the Arctic Circle, aboard Hurtigruten's Midnatsol, for a New Year special? Passengers from the UK have to fly out early on 31st December to pick up Midnatsol in Bergen and will be served a New Year's Evebanquet as the ship sails to Tromso. Bergen is called ‘the capital’ of Norway's fjord district.
If you arrive a few hours before departure, stroll around the old wooden buildings in the Bryggen Wharf, remnants of its Hanseatic past. Tromso itself has the highest number of old wooden houses in North Norway, the oldest of which dates back to 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in the city which is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer and many winter themed events too. Both the Tromso International Film Festival and Nordlysfestivalen ( which translates as the Aurora Festival), a classical music festival, are held in January and on the last day of that moneh there is the Day of the Sun (Soldagen), when the sun finally reaches above the horizon after the polar night. Tromso sits right in the middle of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) zone, and is considered one of the prime locations to observe the phenomenon. The £1,065 fare includes return flights, transfers, four nights on the ship and half-board accommodation in Tromso at the end of the journey.
