St Lucia is one of the Caribbean islands that has become suddenly popular for several reasons: the first is the superb scenery and the second is the very low level of crime on the island – a subject which has been brought into stark focus after recent problems on the Bahamas.
St Lucia has nearly 20,000 acres of rainforest set in the island’s interior, and this largely undisturbed and pristine environment is criss crossed with hiking trails. There are many rare plants and birds to be seen and these rainforest trails are not necessarily a rugged experience, several of them are comfortable walking for even the laziest cruise passenger. Watch out for the stunning cascades and waterfalls that are located along many of the marked paths.
There are also fantastic natural parks such as Fond d'Or which offers the chance to see the famous leatherback turtles and some beautiful waterfalls alongside the Fond Doux Estate which has fantastic facilities for sampling local rum and Creole cuisine during your excursion. There are also lovely botanical gardens to which many cruise lines run excursions. St Lucia is visited by P&O, Royal Caribbean, Costa and Carnival cruise lines as well as Fred Olsen on certain cruises.
