Cruise destinations in focus Canada

Visiting Canada is not necessarily the first choice for cruise passengers but it is becoming an increasingly popular destination, partly due to the spectacular scenery and wildlife spotting opportunities and partly because the country has become as vibrant a shopping, eating and partying centre as the USA.

St John is the largest city in coastal New Brunswick's and many cruise ships offer tours of the area that include the Old City market, a centre for top quality foods and local produce such as dulse, something of an acquired taste as it’s made from locally harvested seaweed which is dried and turned into a snack. Then there’s Reversing Falls, a peculiar local sight that results from the coast having some of the highest tides in the world and it means that huge whirlpools, waterfalls and fast-flowing rapids can be seen moving in one direction as the tide flows in through the gorge and then reversing their direction as it flows out again. Some cruise lines offer a jet-ski experience to feel the force of the water first hand.

Then there’s Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia located on the world’s second-largest harbour. It’s a flourishing water-focused city and offers many sightseeing opportunities including the Tall Ships Quay with historical vessels on show. Alternatively you can take a harbour tour in an amphibious craft that travels from the land to underwater to give you an amazing view of the port both above the water and below. Or you can tour Halifax cemetery where nearly 200 victims of the Titanic sinking were buried.
