Eurodam to Bahamas

With Eurodam, Holland America Line tried to stick with much of its hallowed traditions of excellence while, at the same time, adding some newer options intended to lure a slightly younger demographic on board. But could this new ship garner applause from both camps?

On the whole, I vote yes. Old timers will love the gorgeous art work, dotted at random intervals around the ship, that still point to the past. There are also still the lift boys, with their traditional scarlet pill box hats, and Royal Dutch high tea, served every day on board.

On the other hand, entertainment- never typically a strong point before- has become a lot better. Key to this is the addition of the always packed out BB King's Blues Club. With a live band formed from people who have actually played with the legendary guitarist, this venue put on three, hour long shows each night that were standing room only. The crowds were wowed.

In terms of dining, the main Rembrandt dining room offered the option of first or second seating, or a come as you please option. As usual, Holland America's food and service are a cut above the main stream opposition. And extra tariff venues, such as the Asian accented, upper deck Tamarind, give the Eurodam a quality that sets her as something apart.

Up top, there is a central pool with a sliding glass roof, and a second, adults' only pool at the stern. The promenade deck is still filled with real steamer chairs, complete with cushions, that encircle the deck on both sides.

In terms of indoors, there are bars featuring piano players, a classical duo, and even a cool jazz band that played after dinner. You can check out a first run film in a real theatre, and enjoy hot popcorn while you do so.

My balcony cabin felt very open and expansive, and I loved the wicker chair, table and foot stool out there. Most nights ended her, with a night cap from the mini bar.
