Norwegian Sun to Europe

Debuting in 2001, Norwegian Sun was the first ship in the fleet purposely built for 'Freestyle Cruising', the company's singular, now much imitated prime selling point. With a variety of free and extra charge restaurants on board, the concept of Freestyle means allowing passengers to dine when, where, and with whom they choose. It has been wildly successful and, with this ship, it came to perfection.

But Norwegian Sun has a lot more going for her than that. The upper deck, with twin pools and four hot tubs, is one of the most simply arranged and beautiful afloat. It seems endless, and makes this 78,000 ton ship feel larger than is actually the case.

Internally, this wonderful ship has fine, European styled décor. There is a central atrium lobby with a beautiful staircase, where a whole string of finely furnished bars and lounges lead off heading aft. The upper deck Observation Lounge offers stunning views. Filled with comfortable, faux wicker furniture, this is one of the most beautiful rooms on any ship afloat.

Norwegian Sun offers two formal dining rooms that can be accessed at any time. In terms of the extra fee venues, I still think that le Bistro is the best. With gorgeous table settings and an intimate atmosphere, it serves up succulent Chateaubriand. On sea days, it also offers a jazz brunch, complete with extra fee Mimosas, which is an absolute must do.

Entertainment runs the usual extensive, excellent gamut offered on Norwegian. There is a decent sized casino and a large, hugely popular disco, as well as many more intimate, quiet lounges. The service is fast, snappy and upbeat from a well trained crew with a real 'can do'  attitude that gives this ship a very upbeat on board vibe.

Cabins range from small, cosy insides through to opulent, forward facing suites with hot tubs on the terraces. In between, there is everything from ocean view to balcony rooms, and mini suites that are ideal for families.

Norwegian Sun is also a great ship for families, with an extensive on board programme for everyone on board, from toddlers to teens.
