Magnifica to Mediterranean

At 92,000 tons, MSC Magnifica is a big, boisterous cruise ship, catering to several different nationalities, suffused with an unmistakable Italian flair.

That flair manifested itself in the magnificent, beautifully styled interiors, as well as the sheer, frustrating chaos that resulted from trying to sort out even the smallest problem at reception. The ship was both majestic and maddening at the same time. But nobody could deny the sheer style.

At centre stage was a gorgeous, two storey pool complex, complete with hot tubs, bar, an ice cream parlour, and a sliding glass roof overhead. Because the weather was quite cool, that roof was often closed, and the sound resulting from hundreds of happy, squealing children was akin to bedlam after an hour or so.

Cabin wise, MSC Magnifica really came up trumps. MSC's balcony cabins are the best I have ever seen in the mainstream market; truly luxurious havens complete with rich, ruby red bed bolsters, and a very spacious balcony. The bathroom, though compact, had a fantastic shower.

Because of the multi national passenger mix, shows were largely colourful song and dance affairs-think lots of ABBA revues- whose appeal cut across the board. The enthusiasm of the singers and dancers more than made up for a lack of narrative, and most passengers loved them.

Throughout the Magnifica, the quality of the live music and the sheer, scintillating luxury of the public rooms gave the ship a subtle seductive vibe. She was the most wonderfully relaxing ship, well fed and sometimes indifferently served, but at a price point that nobody could really deny represented excellent value.

MSC handled both embarkation and debarkation with seamless efficiency, and a lot of the staff went beyond the call of duty to help. Because of the multi national passenger list, each on board announcement had to be repeated in at least six different languages.

A lot of UK passengers may resent the hordes of happy children still running around after midnight, but that simply reflects the Italian way of life ashore. For sure, this beautiful ship offers and experience that is truly different. Your call.
